How to play

Four players, two teams, trump and tricks. The same rules are in the app, under Rules on the home screen.

  1. The game

Four players in two teams, partners sitting across from each other. The first team to 10 points wins — or 5 or 7 for a shorter game.

  2. The deck

24 cards: the nine, ten, jack, queen, king and ace of each suit.

  3. The deal

Everyone gets five cards. The last four are left face down, and the top one is turned face up.

  4. Making trump

Starting left of the dealer, each player can pass or order the dealer to pick up the turned card, which makes its suit trump. The dealer takes it into their hand and puts a card face down in its place.

  5. Second chance

If everyone passes, the card is turned down and each player in turn can name any other suit as trump. If everyone passes again the cards are thrown in and the next player deals — unless you're playing stick the dealer, when the dealer has to name a suit.

  6. The bowers

The jack of trump is the best card: the right bower. The other jack of the same colour is next: the left bower, which counts as a trump and not as its own suit. Then the ace of trump down to the nine.

  7. Playing a trick

The player left of the dealer leads. Everyone follows suit if they can; if they can't, they can play anything, including a trump. The best trump takes the trick, or if there's no trump in it, the best card of the suit led. Whoever takes a trick leads the next.

  8. Going alone

Whoever makes trump can choose to go alone. Their partner puts their cards down and sits the hand out.

  9. Scoring

The team that made trump is trying for at least three tricks.

    3 or 4 tricks1 point
